Rhino Building Products Limited Address by Minister of State Ciaran Cannon T.D.

It is my great pleasure to be in Western Province.

As you know, Ireland’s links with Zambia go back a long way, to the period before independence in 1964. Irish missionary societies were among the main providers of services in health and education and I understand that many of Zambia’s leading citizens received their education at schools run by Irish missionaries.

I specifically requested to come to Mongu because I am aware of the Irish Aid programmes in the Province and the significant investment of many years by the Irish people, which has developed into very strong connection between the people of Ireland and Zambia.

I am proud to be present for the unveiling of the long term sustainability plan by Cheshire Home in Mongu, which as you know is run by the Irish Presentation Sisters, particularly because the Cheshire Home in Mongu is the only home for children with disabilities in Western Province.

The two social enterprises that will be officially opened today- Liseli Lodge and Rhino Building Products Limited, will generate income to support Cheshire Home and create employment in Western Province, also supporting the local economy.

Ireland has also worked with Government, community, civil society organisations, and faith based organisations in Western Province. The most significant support has been to the Ministries of Health, Education and the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services.
