Irish Aid Hosts Overseas Volunteering Fair in Limerick

Volunteering, News/feature, Ireland, 2011

Irish Aid, the Government’s overseas development programme, is hosting a major overseas volunteering fair in Limerick on Friday 18th February, 2011 to highlight volunteering opportunities in developing countries.

The volunteering fair will take place in Limerick City Hall, Merchant’s Quay from 11am to 4pm. The fair is open to the public and admission is free.

Speaking ahead of the fair, Minister of State for Overseas Development, Peter Power, said:

“I would encourage anyone interested in overseas volunteering to come along. This event provides the perfect opportunity for individuals looking to get involved in volunteering abroad to discuss their options with volunteer-sending organisations and to gather the practical information they need to make an informed decision.

“Irish Aid emphasises responsible volunteering so that people research and think carefully before making a decision to volunteer overseas. It is very important that volunteers are organised and managed in a professional manner. The organisations participating have signed up to the Code of Good Practice for Sending Organisations which promotes best practice in volunteering."

Visitors to the fair will be able to meet representatives and former volunteers from more than 20 organisations involved in volunteering.  Workshops on volunteering options will also be held, at which staff from a range of organisations will give presentations on their work, the skills they are seeking and the opportunities available.
