A 'Safety Net' for the poorest in Ethiopia
 

Ethiopia has experienced chronic hunger and malnutrition, an increasing frequency in droughts and, as a result, repeated cycles of humanitarian crises since the 1970s. Even when there are no droughts, over seven million people are at risk of food shortages. To help these people and reduce their vulnerability to ‘food gaps’, the Ethiopian government introduced a ‘Safety Nets’ programme in 2005, with support from Irish Aid and other international donors.
