Mamadeen is a small village in the Rokero locality of Jebel Marra which is under the control of the Sudan Liberation Army. As a village under rebel control it has not received government social services or humanitarian aid in many years. Thankfully, with the help of UNICEF (and support from Irish Aid) this changed on Christmas Day 2017. Nutrition, healthcare and water and sanitation services were greeted with joy and enthusiasm by the local communities. On this day alone, 95 children were screened and 27 were found to be malnourished (28.4%) and thus admitted for treatment.

This long-awaited nutrition intervention saves the lives of young children in the poorest and most marginalised communities where access to food is often restricted causing the development of malnutrition.
