Programme of Strategic Cooperation between Irish Aid and Higher Education and Research Institutes 2007-2011
On 14th December 2006, Minister Hanafin and then Minister of State Conor Lenihan announced a new programme of cooperation between Irish Aid and the third level sector in Ireland.
Irish Aid will allocate €12.5 million to the programme over 5 years.
This programme builds on the commitment made in the Government’s White Paper on Irish Aid to deepen the level of engagement with higher education and research institutes in Ireland. It is intended to facilitate the establishment of collaborative partnerships within and between higher education institutions and research institutes in Ireland and in countries benefiting from Irish Aid support.
Third level institutions and research institutes will be eligible for funding to undertake research on development issues (with particular emphasis on Irish Aid partner countries) and to establish links with institutions in developing countries.
This strategy has been developed by Irish Aid in close consultation with the Department of Education and the third level sector in Ireland. It is managed by the Higher Education Authority.
The overall aim is to increase the capacity of developing country third-level institutions. In its initial phase the programme will focus on Irish institutions.
