Ambassador Paddy Fay, head of mission in Maseru, appeared before the Oireachtas Sub-Committee on Overseas Development on 17 June. The origins of Ireland’s involvement in Lesotho, and the current development programme were discussed. Areas explored in detail included the health status of Lesotho citizens, the HIV and AIDS pandemic, including Ireland’s response, and food security interventions. A total of €10.7 million is allocated to the Irish Aid programme in Lesotho in 2010, with a particular focus on the fight against HIV and AIDS, primary education, sanitation and rural development.
