Overseas Opportunities with the United Nations Volunteers (UNV)
The Volunteer Unit of Irish Aid has agreed to fund seven experienced Irish candidates with the United Nations Volunteer organisation (UNV). These placements are part of the ongoing Irish Aid-UNV partnership programme to promote international volunteering in overseas development (www.unv.org). While the UNV has a register of interested Irish individuals, it has requested additional CVs from Irish individuals who would be interested in working as an Irish Aid funded UNV volunteer overseas.

Assistant Human Rights Officer with OHCHR • Uganda Some duties will include: Collecting information data from persons in Internally Displaced Person (IDP) Camps-Assisting Field Monitors with interviews, writing short reports and following up on reports of human rights violations-Deliver human rights workshops, conferences and seminars-Co-operate with local authorities to strengthen and improve structures and increase information sharing and joint co-operation.
HIV & AIDS Positions with the World Food Programme • Mozambique Some duties will include: Manage the OVC and HIV & AIDS Care and Treatment programmes in Sofala and Manica provinces-Ensure that HIV & AIDS is mainstreamed throughout all projects while linking with local government offices and partners-Comply with WFP policies, criteria and procedures for food aid and national food assistance targeting and support guidelines-Strategically develop OVC Support, HIV Care and Treatment programmes with the WFP Country Office Programme Unit-Establish and maintain links with partner organisations for OVC activities-Capacity building with partner organisations to strengthen food aid considerations and complimentary basic services in their projects.
Programme Officer for Vulnerability Assessment and Mapping with the World Food Programme • Cambodia Some duties will include: Increase awareness of WFP in country to ensure food aid preparedness to vulnerable communities-Establish and maintain a food security and vulnerability monitoring system to record changes in food security and vulnerable communities-Develop information materials to raise awareness about contingency planning and emergency needs assessment-Design and implement WFP programmes focusing on problem analysis and distributing food aid on the basis of geographic and socioeconomic considerations-Participate in the analytical work of the UN Country Teams and provide inputs on food security related components to UN agencies-Prepare thematic maps that support country level operations like logistics, infrastructure, personnel, NGO services.
Programme Officer for Social Assistance, Health and Nutrition with the World Food Programme • Mozambique Some duties will include: Manage the Social Assistance, Health and Nutrition programmes in the provinces of Gaza and Inhambane-Identify and address issues in programme implementation-Advise the country office on capacity building initiatives and conduct training workshops-Facilitate and support the Gaza OVC committee- Discuss with the Cooperating Partners (CPs) on the development of Field Level Agreements (FLAs)-Liaise with the WFP Logistics and CPs on commodity dispatches and stock movement.
Associate Community Services Officer with UNHCR • Ethiopia Some duties will include: Organize meetings with target refugee groups to determine needs, issues, and community responses-Link up with partner organisations to determine gaps in the delivery, measure performance, establish networks for a comprehensive response to refugee community’s needs-Monitor formal and non-formal education, vocational skills training and income generation activities-Select recipients of DAFI Scholarships-Monitors the co-ordination of medical services in the refugee camps- Identifies the causes and possible solutions to the problem of child exploitation in the refugee camp, and liaises with concerned services- Assists the protection staff with interpretation and counselling of refugees.
Programme Officer for Civil Society and Gender with UNDP • Timor Leste Some duties will include: Acting as the focal point for NGOs-Training programme assistants in the Governance Unit- Mobilizing resources from Timor-Leste development partners for current projects-Facilitating project approval process and ensuring approved projects are results-based-Developing an advocacy strategy for each project in collaboration with the UNDP media officer-Producing monthly financial analysis reports, providing information on the overall programme approval level, outstanding obligations as well as planned and actual expenditure status.
Media Officer with UNDP • Sierra Leone Some duties will include: Devise strategies and identify entry points for UNDP SIL advocacy/resource mobilization opportunities-Write press releases, speeches, op-eds, outreach material and provide editorial support to the various units- Build constituencies, establish and maintain close working relations with the media), donors, private sector and key development partners to help position UNDP as a pivotal actor and trusted expert in the development challenges of the country-Organize media campaigns and facilitate media visits-Monitor the national, regional and international press coverage of UNDP and the development debate in the region.

The deadline for receipt of applications is 8th of August 2008.
UNV will contact candidates who are short-listed. Short listed candidates by UNV will then be called for interview in the Irish Aid Volunteer and Information Centre in Dublin, on behalf of UNV.
Interested applicants must have a minimum of 5 years work experience after their university studies in the relevant field. Please note that these positions are on a voluntary basis, subject to the normal terms and conditions of service of UNV volunteers with a volunteer living allowance of approximately $1,400/mth depending on the particular posting. Irish Aid has agreed to fund the assignments on a two year basis, renewable after the first year.
